I got to see Neil Gaiman a couple of weeks ago at the Vancouver Public Library. HHe was very gracious, considering that he was going through a whirlwind tour. He patiently answered all my questions - Larrissa is not meant to be a radical feminist and was inspired by Apuleuis's Golden Ass; a good source for the original European fairy tales is the Opies' book and Annotated Grimms. He'd met TNH at a panel in 1986. Anansi Boys was great, and I got my review of it published in the Douglas student paper, The Other Press.
Serenity was fine, I really enjoyed hanging out with the Browncoats at TGIF afterwards. Liz Phair's new album is way better than her last, although not as original as Exile. Fionna Apple's Extraordinary Machine is brilliant, must get around to writing the review today. Pratchett's Thud! - I just didn't like the pat way he resolved the conflict. I expect better from him. |
